Leigh Gruppetta

It’s no real surprise that Leigh Gruppetta has spent his entire working life within the music industry. He grew up in a house purchased with the proceeds of his dad’s drumming efforts and then fell under the spell of rock’n'roll at an early age, having been enchanted by the phenomenon of Kiss.

Continuing the theme, his first paying job was in Melbourne’s once legendary independent record store Au Go Go, where most of his paycheck went straight back to the register from vinyl purchases. He continued on in retail with a job at HMV and was promoted to a managerial role within two years. At the same time, Leigh was playing in various Melbourne pop punk bands. However his largest claim to musical fame was having Silverchair open for his band The Affected.

Taking this as a subtle hint, Leigh focused on the business side of music, taking a sales rep position with Shock Records, before being poached by Warner Music Australia. Focused on growing his career beyond sales, Leigh eventually joined Festival Mushroom as a Promo Manager, working under Frank Varrasso and Michael Parisi. Leigh returned to Shock Records to take on a Label Manager position, where he worked on acquisitions and developing new artists. In this role, Leigh licensed acts such as The Prodigy, Groove Armada, Crystal Castles and label managed acts including Bloc Party, Kitty Daisy and Lewis and Stereophonics.

Today, Leigh is the GM of Music at Shock Records and oversees their new local imprint, Permanent Records. He still listens to Kiss.
