Listen to the Music

As part of Song Summit 2012, we are giving conference delegates the opportunity to receive advice and feedback on their music with Listening Panels.

These Listen to the Music sessions will give delegates the chance to have their music discussed by a panel of industry specialists who write, listen to or select music for a living.

A limited number of songs submitted by delegates will be chosen and discussed in front of an audience.

The panels will demonstrate how A&R executives, publishers, songwriters, producers and radio programmers choose the music they do and why.  All three day Song Summit delegates are invited to submit their songs for consideration.

Applications have now closed.

The following three-day delegates had their songs critiqued at Listen to the Music, Song Summit 2012:

  • Heidi Millington’s song ‘Street Lights’
  • Matthew Connelly’s song ‘Soon We’ll Be Photographs’
  • Fiona Wilde’s song ‘The Spaces Between’

Smoky Dawson Foundation Grants

Smoky Dawson Foundation

Congratulations Emma Swift and Scott Spark who have won the 2012 Smoky Dawson Foundation Scholarship!

The Smoky Dawson Foundation was created in memory of Australian country music legend Smoky Dawson, to support Australian songwriters and the Australian music industry.

Established by Smoky’s family, the foundation hopes to keep the memory of Smoky alive for generations to come.

Smoky is part of that great lineage of Australian artists, alongside Slim Dusty and Paul Kelly, where songwriting is fundamental to their career. They’re the kind of careers I’ve always admired the most. Song Summit also champions the importance of songwriting, inviting us to discuss, explore and improve our craft. And, quite honestly, this is exactly what I’m looking for as I work towards my next album. Having released my first album in 2010, I feel as though I’d benefit immensely from the creative and professional inspiration and camaraderie that’s sparked when you meet other songwriters and see them in action, especially ones at the top of their game.”

- Scott Spark

“I am hugely inspired by traditional country music and it would be a great honour to further develop my skills as a writer and performer through the Smoky Dawson Foundation. I recognise his enormous contribution to Australian country music and would dearly love to also make my own contribution to this genre, with the help and guidance of Song Summit workshops and mentorships. I am new to songwriting and have never participated in any workshops such as this and I am sure this will help build a solid foundation for my future as a professional musician.”

- Emma Swift
